Solar Borehole Pumps for Kenyan Farms: How Much Water, How Reliably, and What It Costs

For farms, greenhouses, and rural homesteads without grid power, the choice for borehole and irrigation pumping usually comes down to diesel generator or solar pump system. Both work. The difference shows up over time, in fuel bills, maintenance calls, and how much you can plan your farming around a reliable water supply.

How a Solar Pump System Works

A solar pump system pairs a DC submersible or AC surface pump with an MPPT controller and a solar panel array sized to the pump's power draw. The MPPT controller optimises output as sunlight varies through the day, running the pump faster in strong midday sun and slower during cloudier periods, rather than requiring a fixed voltage input. There's no battery needed in most configurations, the pump simply runs while the sun is up and fills a storage tank that supplies water around the clock.

How Much Water, Realistically

In Nairobi and much of Kenya, effective peak sun hours average 5 to 6 hours a day. A correctly sized system pumps during those hours into a storage tank, so daily water availability depends on tank capacity and pump flow rate rather than pumping continuously around the clock. For irrigation, the system can be configured to feed drip or sprinkler lines directly during pumping hours, or to a header tank for gravity-fed distribution at any time.

Pump selection depends heavily on your borehole's completion report, particularly depth and yield. Elatec supplies pumps rated from 30m to 300m+ depth, and sizing without that report is guesswork. If you don't have one, a borehole test is the first step before any pump gets specified.

Solar Pumping vs Diesel Generator: The Real Comparison

Diesel Generator

Lower upfront cost, but ongoing diesel expense that scales directly with pumping hours, plus regular servicing, oil changes, and a genuine fuel theft/logistics risk in remote areas.

Solar Pump System

Higher upfront cost (a submersible solar borehole pump from Davis & Shirtliff's Dayliff SUNFLO-A range runs from roughly KES 135,000 before panels), but near-zero running cost after installation, and no fuel logistics to manage.

For farms running irrigation daily through the growing season, diesel costs accumulate fast enough that solar's payback period is often under 2 years. For occasional or seasonal pumping needs, the calculation shifts, and a smaller diesel or hybrid setup can sometimes make more sense. This is worth working through with real numbers rather than assuming solar always wins.

Brands and Equipment We Work With

Elatec installs DC brushless submersible pumps from Lorentz and Grundfos SQ Flex for deeper boreholes, alongside AC submersible pumps with solar VFD controllers for higher-yield applications. For shallow wells, tanks, or smaller irrigation setups, a compact solar diaphragm pump like the Dayliff SUNFLO-S handles the job at a lower cost point, around KES 58,000 before panels.

  • โ€ขDry-run protection: Controllers are configured to stop the pump automatically if the borehole runs low, protecting the pump from damage
  • โ€ขFloat switch integration: Tank level controllers stop pumping once storage is full, avoiding wasted output and overflow
  • โ€ขFlow testing at commissioning: Every installation is flow-tested before handover to confirm actual output matches the design

If you have a borehole completion report and want a proper sizing quote, our solar pump systems service covers everything from pump selection through panel installation and commissioning. We also partner with licensed drilling companies if you're starting from scratch.
