Gate automation is one of those categories where a little bit of half-right information travels a lot further than it should. Here are five claims we hear regularly from customers and installers alike, and what actually holds up.
Myth 1: "Any gate motor works for any gate"
A motor is rated for a maximum gate weight, and that rating exists for a reason. A CAME BX-78 rated to 400kg pushed onto a heavy steel-plate gate well above that weight will overheat its motor, wear its gearbox prematurely, and generally fail within months rather than years. The fix is not to buy a bigger battery or a stronger remote, it is to size the motor correctly. A gate over 800kg needs something like a FAAC 844 or Centurion D10 Turbo, not a residential-grade unit pushed past its limit.
Myth 2: "Battery backup is optional, it's just a nice extra"
This one causes real problems. Kenya Power outages are routine, not rare, and a gate motor with no backup simply stops working the moment the grid drops, at exactly the time when people most need reliable access, arriving home after dark or during an emergency. Every gate motor we install ships with either a built-in or external battery backup, and a manual release key as a second layer of fallback. Treating backup power as optional is treating the single most common failure mode as unlikely to happen, when in most parts of Kenya it happens weekly.
Myth 3: "Automation isn't worth it for a small compound"
The value of automation has less to do with plot size and more to do with how often the gate opens and who is opening it. A small compound with a househelp, a gardener, deliveries, and a car or two moving in and out several times a day gets exactly the same convenience and security benefit as a large estate, someone is no longer getting out of a vehicle at night to manually push a heavy steel gate open.
Myth 4: "A keypad code is as secure as a remote"
Not quite. A shared PIN code that several household members and staff know is only as secure as the discipline around not sharing it further, and codes on a keypad worn down by frequent use can sometimes be guessed from finger wear patterns on the buttons. Rolling code remotes generate a new transmission code on every use, which is a materially different security model. Keypads are genuinely useful (no remote to lose, easy for staff without one), but they solve a different problem than remote-based rolling code security, not the same one.
Myth 5: "Once it's installed, a gate motor needs no maintenance"
Gate motors are mechanical systems operating outdoors, exposed to dust, rain, and, in coastal areas, salt air. Chains stretch, gearboxes need lubrication, and photocell lenses get dusty enough to stop triggering reliably. A motor left completely unchecked for years is far more likely to fail suddenly, often at an inconvenient moment, than one given a basic annual inspection.
